Currently the most important tasks of the clothing industry are the ones for improving the first and basic stage of the designing process. This is the stage of model appearance and its patterns elaboration. In this stage the high quality of the future item is founded and it ought to be automated to compete successfully on the world market. The design of the patterns of garment, which is a complex 3D object, may be created only approximately by traditional methods. Forming the style of clothes for the figure of a concrete person in a 3D environment following the layout of the details of the style to 2D would allow combining the advantages of mass production and tailoring, creating individual garment with good fitting, excluding the process of trying on. Nowadays 3D CAD system development is one of main processes in the garment designing field. There are possibilities to gain good results from virtual fitting, by simulating a reality-like garment on a virtual mannequin in several systems (Optitex, Lectra, Assyst a.o.). These systems allow to estimate the fitting of clothes on a standard or individual mannequin. There are also known attempts to create a garment form in a virtual environment at first following a layout of the garment peaces in a plane after that. Such systems (CDI, Asahi) would exclude the traditional garment designing process. The CAD system Staprim is an original and interesting example. There are several types of 3D systems – the purpose of usage is different. The aim of this research is to systemize the types of systems available on the market.
