Environmental science includes a wide range of diverse issues. Practically, there is no branch which would not be connected in one or another way with environmental science and, specifically – environmental engineering. The present research was aimed at the analysis and pointing out of the generic or core components of environmental engineering (in a form of a mind map), reflecting the inner logic and essence of this subject area. It formed the basis of implementing the multidisciplinary approach to integrated mastering of environmental engineering and English for specific purposes (ESP) at Riga Technical University, both online and offline. The above approach helps to improve considerably the selection of the study content in ESP in environmental engineering, and also make decisions about the terminology minimum to be selected/mastered. Among the basic factors in selecting the terminology are: the historical development of the field of environmental science; integration of the special and related areas; pointing out the core components reflecting the essence of the field (Vygotsky, Lompscher, Davydov). The analysis has been done in collaboration with the field experts. As a result, the foreign language (English, German, French etc.) becomes an integral part of engineering education. It also allows the language specialists in cooperation with the field experts, first, to design an up-to-date online and offline study content in ESP, and, second - to point out the terminology minimum to be mastered and/or included in the terminology dictionary of environmental engineering.
