The paper presents a hydrological survey of the Baltic sea - the slow water exchange is cosidered to be one of the causes why this inland sea is so susceptible to pollution. The paper deals with different types of pollution which affect the ecosystme of the Baltic sea and are caused by marine transport e.g., various oil spills, antifouling ship paints and their adverse effect on the sea flora and fauna, invasive marine species introduced by ship ballast water and their influence on the marine food chain. The solutions to improve the Baltic sea ecology propsed by the auhos are viewed within the framework of EU legislation.
