In this work the effect of three liquid phase additives on setting of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) at near neutral pH is investigated. These additives are pyrophosphate, tartrate and citrate ions. α-TCP cements set by solution of α-TCP and subsequent precipitation of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite.
By using liquid phase additives it is possible to control the setting time of α-TCP cements at near neutral pH (6 – 8). Investigated additives retard initial HAp formation. The nature of setting time modification (acceleration/retardation) is dependent on the initial pH and additive concentration in the liquid phase.
